Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church

Church History

On the third Sunday, November 16, 1947, Fellowship Missionary Baptist
Church was organized in the Union Baptist Theological Seminary, located
2600 Chew Street, by Reverend T. T. Bradford, pastor of First Mount Olive
Baptist Church, Reverend Johnny M. Mitchell, father in the ministry.


Fifteen (15) people joined in the organizational service. Sister Bobbie L.
Wilson recommended Rev. Mitchell as Pastor.


Pastor Mitchell appointed Deacon Douglas and Deacon Alex Harrell to the
Deacon Board and named the proper auxiliaries; Sunday School,
Missionary Society, Choir, Usher Board and B. Y. P. U. (Baptist, Young,
People, Union).


Rev. C. H. Roberts conducted the first Soul Searching Revival in May
1948.


Ground breaking services were held early in 1948. The church was
constructed on a “cash basis”. In May 1952, the Church and friends
marched from the Seminary to new church building at 2428 Chew Street,
singing “When the Saints Go Marching In”, led by Pastor Mitchell and Sister K. Harrell.


One Sunday morning, August 29, 1971 at 11:00 service as Pastor Mitchell preached an uncompromising gospel, he continued to call on his help … he said, “Help me Holy Ghost” repeatedly, as he preached he was called from labor to reward.

 

Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church was faithfully pastored by Reverend Mitchell for 24 years.

On December 5, 1971, the Officers and members called Reverend James
Timothy Porter to be Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church effective
immediately. At the time, Reverend Porter was pastoring Macedonia
Baptist Church. He accepted the call and took over full pastorage the
second Sunday in January 1972.


Pastor Porter faithfully serviced as pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church for
26 years. Under his leadership …

Brother Floyd Stubblefield confessed his calling to the ministry, November
1977.


Brother Wilbert Holmes confessed his calling to the ministry, March 25,
1979.


Brother Maurice Johnson confessed his calling to the ministry under Pastor
Porter leadership.


The first Annual Gospel Bowl was held at Fellowship Baptist Church in
January 1980.


The first Annual Mission Workshop was held in September 1980.


The first Annual Prayer Bowl was held in November 1980


The Mass Choir was organized from the Fellowship Baptist Church Choir
under the Directresship of Sister Deloris Brewer.


The church was remodeled, new pews, new piano, new organ, a lot was
purchased for parking.

Pastor Porter health begin to fail him, and he became Pastor Emeritus and
Minister Edward Dean Cheatham became Pastor of Fellowship Baptist
Church in August 1998.


Pastor Cheatham was pastor from August 6, 1998 to April 7, 2002. After
preaching an awesome sermon that Sunday went home to be with the Lord later that evening.

Rev. T. W. Swayzer vision was to go North, to build a new sanctuary, On a hot sunny day September 6, 2009 Pastor Swayzer, officers, members and friends march from 2424 Chew to the entrance of our new sanctuary at 2432 Chew Street, singing “We Come This Far By Faith” The theme of the day was “A New Beginning” Psalms 118:24-29 (Read the program)
… due to failing health Pastor Swayzer stepped down from pastoral ship
January 11, 2011.

Rev Lucious G. Buggs IV – accepted the role of Interim Pastor and
operated in that capacity for six months. He remained faithful and
committed to Fellowship Baptist Church. July 31, 2011 at 3:00 PM Rev.
Buggs was installed as Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church. The theme
scripture was Jeremiah 3:15 “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” Pastor Buggs faithfully teaches the word with knowledge and understanding every Tuesday at Bible Study and he rightly divides the word of truth every Sunday morning.


June 10, 2012 on a hot sunny day Pastor Buggs, Reverend Swayzer,
Reverend Hart, and Reverend Burns, along with the congregation left the
cool sanctuary singing “We come this far by faith” to enter a hot parking lot for the Cornerstone Dedication Service.

Minister Robert Burns dedicated the cornerstone.


Deacon Don Carter presented a plaque to Frazier-Mitchell Funeral Service,
Mr. R. L Mitchell, owner, for the donation of the cornerstone.

The church has added an outreach ministry and ministers to the community
by means of giving clothes, food, prayer and of course Pastor shares the
word. The church has a food pantry ministry, it blesses those in need. Ask
and you shall receive.
We are celebrating the journey of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church 72 years of existence, thanking God for our existence in the community,
Growing Stronger, Growing Deeper and Reaching Higher.
